FIFA Approve Trial
Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 11:52AM
FIFA have approved the trial of goalmouth Referee's during the World Club Championships in December. They will add two goal mouth Referee's during these games.
A FIFA spokesman said the precise role of the two extra officials, including their general positioning, would be determined in the run-up to the competition.
FIFA have previously said that they would be using this tournament to test goal mouth technology and so I suspect that this is to compare the two methods. While adding 2 extra officials to games would cause a resource problem (apparently the FA are 3000 officials down on last season) it would be cheaper and easier for some of the less wealthy FA's to apply
