Saturdays Match
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 4:53PM
Im currently padding a bit of time before I go of to tonight's game at Lougborugh. Ive got about 30 mins to kill so having realised this morning ive not put Saturdays report up thought now would be a good time.

Saturday I was out on the Southern league as assistant for the Bromsgrove vs Hemel Fixture. Hemel were top at the start of the day picking up 5 wins from 6 and were favourites going into the game. As it turned out this was proved correct as they ran out 3-0 winners.
It was an interesting game for a couple of reasons. If you've been to Bromsgrove you will know that infront of the technical area they have a wall. This sits about 2 metres from the edge of the pitch. All through the 2nd half I had spectators behind me telling me that the Hemel Managment were stood infront of the wall and I should get them back. Now the question is does the wall count as the edge of the technical area? It probably does in this case as there was no other markings. However it was more than the 1 metre away from the edge of the pitch and they weren't wandering. So i left them to it. Mr Assessor said I handled them well so he was happy.
On Mr Assessor he picked me on a couple of things. A couple of times I flagged side on for goal kicks! Also I was told i was signalling to high for throw-ins and the flag wasnt unfurling enough. So to lower the flag to 45 degree's more. Both things seem picky but im happy to have those things as it means im not doing anything major wrong and there polish to the performance. However I dont want them on the next assesment.
Not sure if its a bit of rust still there or what but ive not quite been happy with my lining yet this season. Ive got a another line Saturday then Tuesday so hopefully ill find that form. Its not so much decision making more rhythm I feel Iam lacking if that makes sense.
Early in the 2nd half though I had an incident that got me some flack for the rest of the match. Two players near the 18 yard box were tussling for the ball. The Hemel player came over the back of the Bromsgrove player having jumped to win the ball. They got tangled as they where both on the floor and Hemel player kicked his foot back. I spotted this straight away and flagged the Referee over. However was it Red or Yellow. I explained what had happend and in my opinion it was a caution, which issued.
I got a lost of flack as spectators thought it was Violent, however no one from the benches or player's really said anything. Apart from the other player who was cautioned for dissent. Talking about it afterwards I explained that yes he had brought his boot back however I believed it was a "get off" kick out rather than a premeditated "have that" kind of stamp. Mr Assessor didn't comment on it much so he must have been happy

Interesting insight into the incident Saturday. I think what really got the fans riled was the referee's previous failure to book the number 5 when he had two opportunities to do so in the first half. Both were at the other end of the field but you may remember one was a late tackle and the other what we felt was a dangerous foot up which he penalised with an indirect free kick whilst our player received attention as he made contact with the top of his head. He compounded this later by booking Sam Alsop for a late tackle which appeared no different to the one he'd failed to book the 5 for previously. Mind you when you're down you'll try and get anything and we needed something to get us going. It would be interesting to know how the assessor saw the referee though!
In what way is kicking someone not violent?
Thanks for the comments.
I will do my best to explain the best I can here but it may not to be clear. The thing is juding any incident is as simple as being black or white. For example if you consider "the last man" type of incident there are other factors to consider distance from goal etc.
With a kick you have that short time to consider, was it agressive or frustration, was it intended to hurt, where was it in relation to play and what had happended before.
But surely if it was a "get off" kick it was intended to hurt him so that he got off?!
Great to have a blog like this though, by the way!
